How Long is the Course?
This course runs for seven weeks. We call our online courses 'flexible learning' because they’re set up so you can work through them around your job and home commitments. Once you enrol, you’ll see all the key deadlines inside your online learning platform, so you can stay organised and on track.
The course is split into four units:
- Current data protection legislation and how it’s applied
- What organisations should put in place for handling data
- Common threats that can hit ICT systems and how to guard against them
- The results of not protecting data, including what happens after a breach

Eligibility Criteria
This course is funded by the government. To be able to study for free, you need to meet the following requirements:
- You must currently live in England
- You must be aged 19 or over
- You must not be enrolled on an apprenticeship
Depending on where you live, additional conditions may apply. If you enrol and then either don’t complete the course or withdraw, there’s a £125 cancellation fee. This is used to cover administration costs.
