If you’re aiming to become a therapist in the UK, this course takes a close look at how to use counselling skills and techniques in a way that genuinely supports people. You’ll learn how to handle everyday client interactions, why checking in with your own thinking matters, and how using feedback and guidance can help you improve. You’ll also explore counselling theory, which is a great way to grow your self-awareness over time.

This Level 3 counselling online course is made for learners who already use counselling skills in their day-to-day job, across a range of sectors. It’s also a solid starting point if you want to move towards accredited counsellor status with one of the recognised counselling professional accrediting bodies.

How will I study?

We call our online courses “flexible” because they’re built to fit around your life, not the other way round. You’ll get access to our online learning platform, where you’ll complete your assessments with support from a specialist tutor who knows the subject.

How long is the course?

The course takes 22 weeks to complete. We describe it as “flexible learning” since you can work through it alongside your job and home responsibilities. Once you’ve enrolled, your online course platform will show all deadlines, so you always know what’s coming next and can stay on track.

Is this course free?

This course may be available through the Government scheme called “Free Courses for Jobs”, so you could be able to study without paying. Is this course recognised?

This course is accredited by NCFE CACHE, an awarding organisation with more than 170 years of experience. NCFE is recognised by the UK Department for Education and is regulated by Ofqual.

What can I do after this course?

This course can help prepare you for roles such as:

- Counsellor (£23,654 to £45,838)
- Youth Worker (£18,000 to £33,000)
- Psychotherapist (£40,056 to £53,218)

As a knowledge-based diploma, it strengthens your understanding of counselling theory and shows how it can be used across different settings. It can also work as a stepping stone if you want to go further with face-to-face learning, especially if you’re working towards becoming an accredited counsellor.

There is government funding available for this course as part of the Free Courses for Jobs scheme.

To be eligible, you’ll need to meet these requirements:

Currently live in England
Be aged 24+ (if you’re between 19 and 23, please still reach out, as there may be other funding options available in your area.)
Earn under £25,000 per year
