How it Works
On our Leadership and Teamwork course, you can study for a Level 4 diploma (120 credits), a Level 5 diploma (120 credits), or combine both as a Level 4 and 5 diploma (240 credits). The whole aim is to give you the practical skills you need to do well in the business world.
Everything is delivered online, and you can start whenever you want. No waiting around. It’s fully flexible. For each module at Level 4 and Level 5, you’ll work through 40 hours of structured guided learning. On top of that, you’ll have an extra 30 to 50 hours of optional study materials. These can include exercises, recommended reading, digital resources, and self-check activities.
To finish the course, you’ll complete 10 online assignments at Level 4 and 6 online assignments at Level 5. Each assignment is usually around 5,000 to 8,000 words. When you pass, you’ll receive the full diploma, and you may be able to build on your qualification by topping up to a bachelor’s degree with a range of UK universities.
Throughout the Leadership and Teamwork course, you’ll get access to 1-2-1 tutor support and webinars, plus social learning forums and extra resources. If you want to see the support in more detail, check out our Student Resources page. You can also review the academic standards we follow and the professional groups we’re connected to, so you know you’re getting a solid learning experience.
Course Modules
The Level 4 Diploma is made up of 10 modules:
Managing people in organisations – Managing people properly is a must if an organisation wants to hit its goals. Staff are the most valuable resource you have, so their needs, roles, and expectations should be taken seriously.
Culture and the organisation – So what exactly is culture? You might think of art and music, or maybe values, beliefs, and how people communicate. Culture is really all of those things together. Terpstra and David (1991) describe culture as ‘a learned, shared, interrelated set of symbols which unite and identify members of a society’.
Developing personal skills – In a modern organisation, a manager needs more than just technical know-how. You’ll be expected to work with people day to day, which means using a broad set of skills such as communication, leadership, encouraging teamwork, and active listening.
Effective communication – On a typical day, a manager might support team members, explain upcoming changes in work or conditions, join formal meetings, and still find time for casual conversations. They might review strategy set by senior leadership, send emails to customers or suppliers, and even research online.
Managing ethically – Sometimes deciding what counts as ‘the right action’ is surprisingly complicated. For example, consider a company creating a large amount of waste. If the factory shuts down, employees and shareholders are affected, and local money dries up. If the factory stays open without reducing waste, the environment suffers, not just now but for the future.
Performance management – The success of an organisation depends heavily on its people. If you think about any business, you’ll quickly realise it comes down to the staff working within it, and how they contribute.
Strategic human resource management – Human Resource Management is about overseeing a key resource in the organisation: people. Without people, there are only limits to what the organisation can achieve. Even automated machines still need people to set them up and program them. Raw materials only become sellable products through human effort, and computers need skilled operators to work them properly.
High performance teams – Organisations operate in a world full of change and uncertainty. To perform at a high level, teams need a mix of skills and experiences. Many businesses have learned that team working is the best way to bring that mix together.
Leadership skills – Strong leadership matters in every organisation, whether it’s public sector or private. Because things change fast now, you also need to see leadership as a skill you can develop, not something you either have or don’t.
Motivating and influencing people – Picture two teams given the same task. Their manager might outline how the work should be done and explain what everyone needs to deliver, including deadlines. Progress gets tracked, resources are in place, and yet the teams will still likely move at different speeds, deliver varying quality, and show different levels of commitment.
