How it works
You can begin the IGCSE Business Studies course whenever you like, and you’ll study fully online. That means you can work around your schedule and keep things manageable while you learn.
The course is built to give you a genuine understanding of how businesses operate, plus the skills you’ll need if you want to keep going into further education or pursue a business-focused career.
Each subject is delivered through structured guided online learning. On top of that, you’ll have optional extras like recommended activities, reading materials, useful digital resources, and quick self-check tasks.
When it’s time to earn your IGCSE qualification, you’ll complete written exams at an approved exam centre. You can read more about exam centres and how to find one here.

Sitting the Exam
To take an IGCSE exam, the first step is finding an exam centre in your country that accepts private candidates. Once you’ve found a centre that fits, you’ll register with them and pay any required fees.
Before exam day, double-check that your statement of entry is correct. Also, make sure you bring the right valid identification to every exam. If anything is unclear, stay in touch with the centre or exam provider, especially if you’re asking about special access arrangements.
After the exams are finished, let the centre or exam provider know if you want special consideration. You’ll then collect your results and certificates. If you feel a review might be needed, you can ask about options like re-marking or appeals through the same centre or exam provider.
Online Business School will support you throughout the whole IGCSE exam process. We can help you locate an approved exam centre, support you through registration, and make sure you’re aware of everything you need to meet.
We’ll also guide you with exam preparation, help you confirm your statement of entry, and explain the identification and access arrangements.
Once you’ve completed the exams, we’ll show you how to request special considerations, how to collect your results and certificates, and how to pursue any review of marking or appeals. The goal is simple: you’ll have the right help at every step.
Am I eligible for this programme?
Most learners complete the IGCSE around the age of 14 to 16, but you don’t have to wait for a specific birthday. If you’re over 14, you can enrol. You also don’t need any previous qualifications to join this course.
Career Progression
After completing this course, students will have the key foundations and core knowledge needed to continue onto A Levels, or a Level 3 qualification with Online Business School.
Subject Content
1 Understanding business activity
In this first part, you’ll get to grips with the main ideas behind business. You’ll look at the purpose and overall nature of business activity, including how businesses can be grouped and categorised. You’ll also explore what makes enterprise and entrepreneurship different, and why some businesses grow quickly while others stay small. Towards the end, you’ll study ways to measure business size, different types of business organisation, business objectives, and stakeholder objectives.
2 People in business
This section focuses on human resources. You’ll learn why motivating employees matters, and what approaches businesses use to keep a workforce engaged. You’ll also cover how businesses are organised and managed, including recruitment, selection, and training. It finishes up by looking at how to communicate effectively both inside and outside the business.
3 Marketing
Here, you’ll explore the role marketing plays and how niche markets and mass markets differ. You’ll learn about market segmentation and how companies break down audiences to target the right customers. Market research is a big theme too, including why it’s important and how it’s carried out. You’ll also cover the marketing mix, commonly known as the four Ps. Finally, you’ll look at marketing strategies businesses use to influence customers, whether they’re operating locally or entering new markets overseas.
4 Operations management
This topic is about production and how the production function works in practice. You’ll cover what production means, the different ways it can be approached, and how productivity can be improved. You’ll also work through different production costs and use break-even analysis to understand when a business starts making a profit. The section wraps up with quality in the production process and how businesses decide where to locate.
5 Financial information and decisions
This part focuses on finance and accounting. You’ll learn why businesses need funding, where that money can come from, and how businesses plan cash flow and manage working capital. You’ll study simple income statements as well as statements of financial position. There’s also practice in interpreting and analysing accounts, including why they’re used and how to make sense of them.
6 External influences on business activity
The last section looks at the external factors that affect businesses. You’ll see how things like government decisions can influence economic, environmental, and ethical issues, and how those pressures filter through into different business functions. You’ll also cover the wider international picture, including globalisation, multinational businesses, and exchange rates, and how these affect both businesses and governments. Legal constraints are another external influence you need to consider, and the section ties these impacts back to the relevant functional areas you’ve studied earlier.
