About this course

It's tempting to believe we're all logical, well-balanced decision makers. But honestly, that's not how most of us behave. We often make choices that don't really serve us, even when we think we are being sensible.

Behavioural Economics looks at the mix between psychology and economic thinking, so you can understand why we act the way we do.

In this course, you'll pick up the core ideas quickly and without the headache, including nudging, framing, social proof, scarcity, and commitment tactics.

You'll also learn how to apply these techniques in an ethical way, not just for 'winning' in the moment.

When you finish, you'll get a signed certificate online, and you'll probably notice your brain working a bit differently from then on.

Suddenly, solutions to tricky problems can feel a lot more obvious, because you're applying real tools rather than guessing.

Your instructor is the brilliant Rory Sutherland.

His three TED talks Life Lessons from an Adman, Sweat the Small Stuff and Perspective is Everything have been watched over a million times.

He's also the author of the bestselling book Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense.

If you need to persuade people, sell products or services, get buy-in, or you simply want a fresh way to look at the world, then you'll fit right into this course.

Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland is widely seen as one of the most influential voices in advertising and behavioural science. He's President Emeritus of Ogilvy Consulting, where he co-created the agency's early behavioural science work, and he's the bestselling author of Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense. Rory joined Ogilvy back in 1988 as a graduate trainee and later spent more than twenty years shaping campaigns as a copywriter and creative director. Eventually, he turned to a bigger question: why do people really do what they do? His view is that humans are wonderfully irrational, and that's not a flaw, it's a feature. The behavioural science practice he helped build is all about spotting small psychological shifts that create outsized effects in how people behave. His TED talks, including the popular 'Life Lessons from an Adman', have been viewed millions of times, which is why he's one of the most watched marketing speakers in TED history. He also writes The Wiki Man column for The Spectator, has previously been President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), and founded Nudgestock, billed as 'Glastonbury for nerds', the largest festival of behavioural science and creativity. Beyond Alchemy, his books include The Wiki Man and Transport for Humans (co-authored with Pete Dyson). Across all of them, you'll see the same themes: logic can be overrated, a 'wrong' idea can still lead to something great, and the biggest wins in business and life often come from thinking differently. Rory is based in Kent, England, and remains one of advertising's most quote-worthy champions of the illogical.
