About this course

Have you ever wondered how behavioural science could actually help in your business, not just sound interesting?

This applied behavioural science course walks you through practical ways to use psychological principles to tackle everyday problems and create real value, whatever industry you're in.

It's meant to sit alongside our popular Behavioural Economics course, which covers the underlying theory. This one is where you take those ideas and put them to work.

Here's the thing, every organisation has issues to solve.

Sometimes it's about getting more people to sign up. Other times it's getting customers to buy more of what you already offer.

Sales and marketing teams can only go so far with the usual toolset. That's where behavioural science becomes a big deal.

At its core, behavioural science is about how people think, choose, and behave when things are real, not just hypothetical.

You'll go through a straightforward framework for researching and shaping behavioural intervention ideas, then you'll design and carry out the changes you want to see.

You'll learn from Rory Sutherland plus a carefully chosen group of practising behavioural scientists from all over the world.

His TED talks, Life Lessons from an Adman, Sweat the Small Stuff, and Perspective is Everything, have collectively been watched more than a million times.

He's also written the bestselling book Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense.

When you finish the course, you'll get a certification and the confidence to start applying behavioural science to problems you face in the real world.

Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland

Rory Sutherland is a hugely influential figure when it comes to advertising and behavioural science. He's President Emeritus at Ogilvy Consulting, where he helped set up the agency's pioneering behavioural science work, and he's also the bestselling author of Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense. Rory started at Ogilvy as a graduate trainee back in 1988, then spent more than twenty years as a copywriter and creative director. After that, he turned to a bigger question: why do people really do what they do? In short, his view is that humans are wonderfully irrational, and that's not a problem to fix, it's part of how we work. The behavioural science practice he helped build focuses on spotting the small psychological shifts that cause outsized changes in behaviour. His TED talks, including the much-loved 'Life Lessons from an Ad Man', have been watched millions of times, which makes him one of the most popular marketing minds on TED. He also writes The Wiki Man column for The Spectator, previously served as President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), and created Nudgestock, described as 'Glastonbury for nerds', which bills itself as the biggest festival of behavioural science and creativity. Alongside Alchemy, his other books include The Wiki Man and Transport for Humans, co-written with Pete Dyson. A common thread runs through everything he writes: logic is often overrated, and the 'wrong' idea can sometimes lead to a 'right' one. Biggest improvements tend to come from thinking differently, not spending more. Rory lives in Kent, England, and he's still one of advertising's best-known champions of the illogical.
